๐ QUICK NOTES (HCF)
๐น What is HCF?
The Highest Common Factor (HCF) is the greatest number that divides two or more numbers exactly.
๐ Also called Greatest Common Divisor (GCD)
๐น Method 1: Listing Factors
โ Example: Find HCF of 12 and 18
Factors of 12 โ 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
Factors of 18 โ 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18
๐ Common factors โ 1, 2, 3, 6
๐ HCF = 6
๐น Method 2: Prime Factorisation
โ Example: Find HCF of 24 and 36
24 = 2ยณ ร 3
36 = 2ยฒ ร 3ยฒ
๐ Common primes with smallest powers
๐ HCF = 2ยฒ ร 3 = 12
๐น Important Points
- HCF is always โค smallest number
- If HCF = 1 โ numbers are co-prime
- Used in equal grouping / distribution problems
