๐ What this Exercise Covers
Exercise 2.2 focuses on the properties of whole numbers, especially:
- Closure Property
- Commutative Property
- Associative Property
- Distributive Property
- Identity Property
โ 1. Closure Property
๐ A set is said to be closed if the result of operation stays in the same set.
โ For Whole Numbers:
- Addition โ
- Multiplication โ
Examples:
2 + 3 = 5 (whole number)
4 ร 5 = 20 (whole number)
โ Not Closed:
- Subtraction โ 3 โ 5 = -2
- Division โ 5 รท 2 = 2.5
๐ 2. Commutative Property
a+b=b+aa + b = b + aa+b=b+a
- Order does not matter
โ Works for:
- Addition
- Multiplication
Examples:
5 + 3 = 3 + 5
4 ร 2 = 2 ร 4
โ Not true for:
- Subtraction
- Division
๐ 3. Associative Property
(a+b)+c=a+(b+c)(a + b) + c = a + (b + c)(a+b)+c=a+(b+c)
- Grouping does not matter
โ Works for:
- Addition
- Multiplication
Example:
(2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4)
๐งฎ 4. Identity Property
- Additive Identity โ 0
๐ a + 0 = a - Multiplicative Identity โ 1
๐ a ร 1 = a
Example:
7 + 0 = 7
9 ร 1 = 9
โ 5. Distributive Property
aร(b+c)=aรb+aรca \times (b + c) = a \times b + a \times caร(b+c)=aรb+aรc
Example:
3 ร (5 + 2) = 3ร5 + 3ร2 = 15 + 6 = 21
โ ๏ธ Important Observations
- Subtraction and division do NOT follow most properties
- Always check which operation is used

- 3 ร 6 = 6 ร 3
- (1 + 2) + 3 = 1 + (2 + 3)
- 12 ร (5 + 1) = (12ร5) + (12ร1)
โ๏ธ Section B: Fill in the Blanks (11โ20)
- 8 + 0 = ______
- 15 ร 1 = ______
- 7 + 3 = 3 + ______
- (6 + 2) + 5 = 6 + (______ + 5)
- 9 ร (4 + 1) = (9ร4) + (9ร______)
- 5 ร 7 = ______ ร 5
- (3 ร 4) ร 2 = 3 ร (______ ร 2)
- 10 + ______ = 10
- 1 ร ______ = 25
- 6 ร (2 + 3) = (6ร2) + (______ร3)
๐ง Section C: True or False (21โ30)
- Whole numbers are closed under addition
- Whole numbers are closed under subtraction
- Multiplication is commutative
- Division is associative
- 0 is additive identity
- 1 is multiplicative identity
- Subtraction is commutative
- Multiplication is associative
- Whole numbers are closed under division
- Addition is associative
๐ Section D: Solve Using Properties (31โ40)
- 25 ร (6 + 4)
- 12 ร (5 + 5)
- (20 + 30) + 40
- 99 ร 8
- 7 ร (9 + 1)
- 50 ร (3 + 7)
- (15 ร 2) ร 5
- 8 ร (25 + 5)
- 100 ร (2 + 3)

๐งฉ Section F: Case-Based Questions (46โ50)
๐ฆ Case Study: Shop Items
A shopkeeper packs items in boxes. Each box contains 10 items. One day, he packs (5 + 3) boxes.
- How many boxes are packed in total?
- Find total items using distributive property
- Which property is used in this calculation?
๐ซ Case Study: Classroom Groups
A teacher divides 24 students into groups of 6.
